KSC-GI SUPERSIZES TEAM UNITY

It’s that very idea of strength in numbers that can unify a company and its components. And this applies to our lunch break as well as to work. An example of this logic of unity was on display last Friday when the Fish Committee sponsored a “Summer Kickoff Cookout” at the Kelly Supply Grand Island branch. KSC’s GI team was treated to a picnic style lunch of grilled hamburgers and all the tasty condiments, along with chips, salads, and even cherry pie. The side dishes were compliments of thoughtful and generous employees. Over the years, an occasional “working” meal together has visibly strengthened the camaraderie of the KSC team members. Historically and culturally, food has been the centerpiece in forming an amicable bond between people down through the ages. Whether it was the Last Supper or the first Thanksgiving, a state dinner at the White House or a soup kitchen in the ghetto, a shared meal has always served to bring people together in a brotherly-sisterly communion of sorts for all who sat down at the table. Food not only provides us with necessary physical nutrition, but it feeds our psyches as well. When we can take a mid-day break from the stress and tension that may have mounted during the morning hours and share a plate of food and hopefully a few laughs with our co-workers, we are instantly refreshed to meet the demands of the afternoon. Fortunately, our 2010 interns, Stacy and Jason, were on hand Friday to witness the good fellowship enjoyed by KSC’s GI stakeholders (or in this case, burgerholders) and to see for themselves how each link forms a strong chain in our branch. It’s the unity, emboldened by a few moments of good food and conversation, that has a powerful and lasting impact on our attitudes toward each other and, ultimately, toward our best friends in the company: our customers. That’s the chain reaction we seek. We don’t achieve this alone, but through team work. It’s amazing how a little camaraderie at the lunch table is then reflected in our work ethic. Our customers sense this and that’s why they’ll keep coming back. |
