1st baordNo matter what you think of the state of the economy, things are booming for Dave Picthall, KDS technician at Grand Island. Or at least they will be at Dave’s Place on the third of July.

And it’s all done with true patriotic flair, right down to the national anthem being performed by his granddaughter.

If you’re going to do it right, then do it big! And have a blast! That’s Dave’s motto when fireworks season rolls around.

It started four years ago with a smaller, simpler backyard display that Dave erected with the help of his son. Now it has grown into an elaborate Fusefest that involves lots of family members so Dave can celebrate our country’s birthday by lighting up the sky at his cabin property along the Blue River near Milford.

Viewing the accompanying photos, you can get a glimpse of Dave’s ingenuity and clearly see how the original concept progressed in four years until it’s become a holiday extravaganza.

When darkness finally falls on the third of July, all Dave has to do is light a fuse and get away. Then his engineering can be seen in all its glory as one fiery explosion ignites another, back and forth from tier to tier, like a rippling wave of dominoes ablaze in a colorful burst of showering sparks.

Not to mention the crackle and boom that’s more fierce than a Nebraska thunderstorm, and the billowing plumes of smoke that float across the river like a thick, acrid blanket of fog.

It’s obvious that Dave’s a true believer in the Big Bang theory.

If you’re up Dave’s way on July 3rd, stop in. You might just see one of the best homegrown light shows in the state.
